No resolution, No problem

I decided to be selfish in January

As we celebrated the dawn of a new year I wasn’t trying to make a resolution, start an eating program or pressure myself into a ridiculous workout regiment.

I just wanted to enjoy the new year and step away from the previous one. What I chose to do was…

  • No live-streaming in my private Facebook group.
  • No online fitness.
  • No hula sessions.

All I did was meditate, practice hot yoga four times a week and explored new recipes. I felt like I had to work on me and ground myself.

Stir fry portobello mushrooms with nori and sesame seeds, over spinach. The dark coloring is the nori.

Be more YOU

I suggest that you take time to ground yourself and reconnect to your beautiful soul. It doesn’t make sense to draw water from an empty well and we all should have learned some important life lessons from 2020.

Covid19, elections and civil unrest contributed to an emotional roller coaster ride. Depression, oppression and worry knocked us off our feet. The last one standing were people who developed a strong sense of self-worth.

Which is why I decided to be selfish and work on being me in January. However, in February I’m launching a new fitness program that involves helping families develop a holistic lifestyle. Woohoo!!!

Stir-fry: kale, sesame oil, sesame seeds, nori and fried tofu. Next to one of my favorites… steamed kalo (taro).

I did a first…

I bought my first microwave oven… seriously! Yes it’s a staple in North American culture but it’s one of the things I’ve rejected. I don’t really need it to cook for me and I don’t like microwave popcorn. Although I do luv kettle corn, yikes!

My retro microwave oven.

I bought it for two reasons. It’s great for melting products to make my salves and my husband has to heat up his meals. (I’ve been meal prepping for him and he’s been eating it cold.)

Can you see my “shaka” in the reflection.

I figured that owning one doesn’t have to be an eyesore. So I actually found something that looked cute. Who knew that a microwave could be this stylish? I’m happy with it.

3 Self-Love, Self-Care GIFTS 🎁

I’ll keep this one short and simple, in fact I’ll just post a bunch of pictures.

Blueberry, Elderberry, Raisins, Apple, Hibiscus & Cornflower Petals.

I have awesome friends who enjoy making teas and tinctures. This tea mix was made by Davina Barril and we share the joy of organic products.

I put some in a carry around tin and it’s delicious.

Elderberry, Nettles & Rose hips

The tea mix above was made by another friend and fellow nature lover Jennifer Vasilez. Both Davina and Jennifer appreciate the gifts of this land and find time to gather and create. The coolest part is that they’re rediscovering the teachings of their Native heritage.

Lucious Oils

Melt: Cocoa Butter, Unrefined Coconut Oil, Shea Butter… Cooling: Macadamia Nut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Argan Oil

Vitamin E for the skin.

Clay Mask

Bulk buy organic beauty products.

Life is a woven web of food, fitness, emotion and so much more. It’s a balance. And when I mention beauty, I’m not talking about what you read in a magazine or see on Instagram. I’m talking about your physical beauty and how it relates to self-care.

These are a few of my fave bulk buy, organic beauty products. Most of my base ingredients come from Mountain Rose Herbs 🌿 locates here in the Pacific Northwest.

I’ve talked about clays before, here, and that’s because of its many benefits. My fave is Rhassoul 💜 luv it!

I recently started to add incense into my routine for the sheer pleasure of the aroma. Shoyeido is my favorite brand because it’s not crazy-smoky like others and I don’t get irritated by the fragrance.

Salts!!! After any grueling workout you’ll want a regenerating salt bath. I like to make my own. But sometimes I get lazy, that’s when I turn to my friend who created these…

Oils!!! After the soak I keep it simple. And yes there is a difference between regular and organic oils.

This is something I just got. Going to do more research on it. It’s a Himalayan salt rock. Have a healthy & fit week!

PEACE BE THE JOURNEY

Women who DO don’t wait for permission!

I speak from experience because if I waited I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m on a WholelisticFit journey and it’s not easy. Excuses and doubt happen but it shouldn’t become a defining factor.

Can you imagine a life without pain, sickness or disease?

What would it take to make that happen?

Stop trying to heal the world. Start healing yourself and the world will take notice. Start with YOU. Because if you’re like me, we’ve seen the headlines and feel the hurt. Our first reaction is sorrow and maybe hopelessness. Sometimes we stop moving all together because we’re chained by sadness. But that’s when you use your WHY to refocus and stay in motion.

Energize your fit schedule with an emotional connection to wellness. Develop a deep and rooted WHY into every squat, plank and burpee.

Make the extra effort, do what the average person wouldn’t. Stay consistent, persevere and believe in the process.

Speaking of process, I was talking to my sister, Make Mahalo, about our goals. She used the term, “the G-d process!” Which I understand as going through challenges KNOWING that there’s a lesson in the midst. The willingness to have faith and keep moving forward.

Will the life lessons ever stop? Probably not. The G-d process seems to be ingrained into the universe.

Keep moving forward!

So I’m doing another fitness concert, and it’s been awhile. The last one was in the Spring and it feels like decades. I can’t wait to sweat along side of some fabulous women and a few good men. The best part is blasting the music 🎶 and moving to the rhythm.

Also if you’re interested my blog WholelisticFit.com has a new article called, “WHY & WILLpower, which do you need first?” It list the 5-Steps-To-A-Strong-Why and includes some pinable quotes. Keep in mind that you have to be a MERMAID to read it, and membership is free. I’m closing with a few vision boards I created and posted on Instagram! PEACE Be the Journey, Ho’omālamalama

5 Reasons to loosen up! As in drink loose leaf teas :)

Fitness is one side to a multifacited life and surrounding yourself with quality products is just as important. I’m sharing a few of my favorite black teas and by a few I mean nine, Lol. I shop local whenever possible and have been fortunate to friend local store owner Robyn Liss of Ubiquitous Journey or Ubi’s Tacoma off the historic 6th Ave area. (You have to visit 6th Ave. businesses in Tacoma but start with Ubi’s.)

blacktea1

Her tea blends inspire me and if you like these just wait until you see all the other varieties in her store. This is just a small example of the organic loose leaf tea selection she carries and we are extremely fortunate to have her in Tacoma. If you’ve never tried loose leaf tea then you’re missing out on some amazing flavor. Oh and the aroma! #huginamug

blacktea2

I could probably fill my blog with images that I capture at her store but they can never do it justice, you simply have to go in and see for yourself. So let me get down to my five reasons to LOOSEN UP!

blacktea4

5 Reasons to Loosen Up!

1. Yummy-ness. That alone should make you run out and buy some. Your tastebuds will fall in love.

2. Quality. Have you ever noticed that tea bags might seem convenient but they lack the fullness. With loose leaf teas you can refill your mug (cup) several times and still taste the full bodied flavor.

 mortar-and

3. Healthy. I could spend all day jabbering about the health benefits but you have better things to do with your time.

4. Fit Choice. I’ve come across several teas that are extremely beneficial during recovery periods between workouts.

15181297_10154171664233763_3368963715995361841_n

5. Peace. If the first four didn’t encourage you then think about living a life worthy of reflective moments. There’s something spiritual about tea, almost a zen like feeling that allows you to breathe deep and hā (the resounding exhale at the end of a well lived day).

Well there you have it my 5 reasons to loosen up. I’ve also added images from #UbisTacoma that I thought you might find interesting. Like the DIY section for beauty products or the ah-mazing selection of organic seasonings. Have a prosperous 2017 and PEACE Be the Journey.

DIY Noodle Bowl

Do It Yourself healthy noodles. Soba is basically buckwheat and that’s an amazing whole grain with protein & fiber. It’s a total win/win situation. I wanted to show you how easy it is to shop & make your own noodle bowl using soba noodles.

Remember that this is a fusion noodle bowl. My version of a bibimbap [Korean] + soba noodles [Japanese]. The main goal is to have a great noodle & dress it with veggies. Keep in mind that the meat is the garnish so try not to overdo it.

There’s a few basic steps when creating your own noodle inspired meal.

Here’s me shopping:

  1. Start with a great organic & whole grain noodle like soba. Follow the package for cooking directions. When it says “rinse” your noodles it’s an important step. Soba is starchy and by giving it a good wash you’ll be able to enjoy the flavor. Prepare like this.  [Fast forward the video to :33]
  2. Choose your sauces. Hoisin can be tricky so read the sodium content & check if it has MSG. There’s the Joyce Chen & Soy Vey which are two that I like. Sometimes I’ll shred ginger & turmeric root onto the noodles. Also, if you like it hot try a chili sauce or Siracha.
  3. Garnish & sides is what makes it so much fun. So try to keep to the 70/30 rule. [I made that up but it sounds cool, lol.] Veggies should make up 70% while meat is the remaining 30% in your bowl.

The two sauces featured above are examples but the links I gave you in tip #2 are best. Also the meat in the picture is a typical Chinese sausage next to a Japanese fish cake. Both are processed but I kind of grew up eating them, some habits are hard to break. Yikes.

I fill my bowl with all kinds of  Korean yummy-ness liked pickled cucumber, kimchi or seaweed salad.  This is where the 70% comes into play, enjoy building your bowl.

PS: If you spend one day prepping all the tiny bits this dish is a quick grab and go type of meal. The noodle takes 3 MINUTES to cook. Seriously, I get my protein, fiber & goodness in one bowl. PEACE Be the Journey.

Need MEAL PREP HELP? Take this free 60min. workshop: BALANCED BABE It will guide you through an outline so you can create your own healthy meals. It’s all the little techniques I use to balance food, fitness & self-care.

My Rainbow Smoothie Challenge.

My self-inflicted RAINBOW SMOOTHIE CHALLENGE was fun for my creative brain. My goal was to keep it organic and I used food to color them. The hardest was blue so I blended purple cabbage and added a pinch of (organic) baking soda. Yes, organic baking soda exist. That did the trick. I made 6 instead of the regular 7 colors and I’m content. Enjoy

Fall, fitness and… clay masks?

One of my favorite things as a child was playing in the mud. My siblings and I would search for the perfect mud puddle or creek with a clay embankment. It was messy and heaven at the same time.  Forget play-dough, our clay was 100% organic without any harmful dyes.

Today I’m grown, slightly mature and a mother but I still enjoy that cool mushy feeling of wet clay. Naturally I would like to indulge in a facial mask but the prices at many of these high-end spas are interesting. After all I use to play in this stuff for free!

I actually checked out a spa and many of the items in their mask are in my kitchen. Products like honey, oats and vitamin E. (I have a supplement shelf.) All I needed was the clay to make my mud mask. Fortunately I know of an organic shop called  Ubiquitous Journey that sells herbs, loose leaf teas, spices and a beauty DIY section. (Do It Yourself.)

I chose three different types of clays, each with unique mineral content and played around with various combinations. It’s so easy to use that I brought some to the ladies in my Zumba class. The picture above was taken after my Facebook lifestream session where I showed them how to mix and apply  the clays.

There are countless blogs, vlogs and articles about these amazing clays. My purpose is to show you a few of the combinations that you can duplicate. The main ingredient is the clay and you can start using it with little prep time. All you really need is purified, filtered or distilled water to mix and make your mud mask. As you can see from the picture below my na keiki (children) wanted in on the fun too!

Basic Mix

  1. One tablespoon clay (a little can go a long way)
  2. Purified H2O (add slowly for a pasty texture)
  3. Few drops of oil (indulge in the nourishing feeling)
  4. Mix and use (I prefer to make it when I need it)
  5. Leave on for about 8-10 minutes

Mini breakdown…

  • Rhassoul Clay – suitable for daily use.
  • French Green Clay (and others) – about once a week or on targeted areas.
  • Fullers Earth Clay – about once a week.

In classic kiddie fashion they had to make faces to go with their mask. I’m super happy for my young teens who can benefit from the clays at an early age. Preventing that horrible teen acne problem that I remember going through. The best part is that it has ZERO chemical content and totally organic.

How cancer started this blog.

A little background information, around 2011 both my sister and I became Zumba fitness instructors and we had big plans to help a lot of ladies get fit. I would bring in my nutritional background and she would blend in her knowledge of fitness. Then in 2015 she was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer as a result of a molar pregnancy. My instincts took me deep into prayer and back to the lessons of MANA. The thought of chemotherapy freaked us out but the tumor markers were growing quickly. Collectively we knew that the healing needed to involve all areas of her being.  Because diseases like these attack the body, plays tricks on the mind and can damage the soul.

img_7475

I wanted to find a way to keep her MIND, BODY & SOUL strong during her treatment. The cancer was in her uterus, bladder & lungs. Her physician took a chance and put her on a rigorous program including 7 TYPES OF CHEMO, one drip was about 12 hours long. I wanted to propose something to my Ohana (family) with a product line that I enjoy. So we got together and I said, “What do we have to loose, why not take a chance and put these products to the test. The other side is death.

We’ve only heard stories about people trying this but we’ve never seen it in action. So she started with an infused organic drink called Genesis™,  daily. That gave her the nutritional foundation during a time when food wasn’t interesting. It’s part of the double whammy of, “You have to eat” while we fry your tastebuds and you’ll develop mouth soars from the cancer treatments. With amazing dedication she eventually added smoothies with beets, cucumber, cilantro, apple, banana, chia seeds, hemp hearts & beets!!!

The dangerous part was if her white blood cells dropped to low they would have to pull back on the chemo. So we all became her caregivers. My parents took care of her needs and took her to numerous appointments, she practically lived there. To our amazement we watched the tumor markers decrease from over 200,000 to 170,000 to 140,000…

img_7442

All the while I kept writing hoping that she was reading my blog and trying some of the challenges. It clawed at my faith and bruised my hope to see her going through this but I never showed it during my visits or daily chats. While she was in treatment my husband and I moved her Ohana into our home due to her husband’s work schedule and the chemo sessions. It was school, work, martial arts, dance classes as usual… almost.

Then it happened her body responded well to the to kill the orcs (cancer cells) treatment which included her supplements at home, whole foods and walks. In fact her doctor told her, “What ever you’re doing, don’t stop.” I pray for more doctors like him who listen to their patients and after four (4) months ZERO tumor markers.

Although it doesn’t work out for all because she experienced four deaths and know of others who had to prolong treatments. It’s a struggle and a painful cycle. She took a risk and tried something involving an old/new approach to healing. Are you wondering if this could work for you or someone you love? Maybe a challenge to get things moving in the right direction or a product line that will support your body. One that nourishes and rejuvenates from the inside out.

You are the designer of your life so take control with kindness and love. Always love.

The challenges I created are listed below or you can search for them in the menu above.

Beautiful Body – Day 19 & 20

Your body has an amazing first line of defense called skin. It protects your muscles, organs & bones. It holds us together and puts up with our tattoos, piercings & writing notes on the palm of our hand.
And how do we show kindness to the tissues of life that cover our entire being?

Well (deep breath) in BEAUTIFUL BODY Challenge  hopefully we’re…

  • Drinking lots of water.
  • Eating foods that are nutrient rich.
  • Meditating. (That’s in the BEAUTIFUL SOUL Challenge)
  • Using products that don’t have long & hard to pronounce names. Keep it simple.
  • Choose a self-care night to indulge in a clay mask, foot soak and bubble bath. (Make up your own routine.)

Try to focus on a good skin care regime. It might not always work out but say this first, “I’m worth it” and then MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Skin Fit: Whipped body butter that looks so good you’ll want to eat it! But don’t.

Throw a DIY SPA PARTY by inviting a few friends to bring ingredients and all of you can mix up batches of creams, lotions, bath bombs and much more.

Foodie Fit: I follow the Domestic Geek  and couldn’t choose just one of her meal prep videos so I made a playlist. She’s worth the subscription & I hope you’ll follow her channel.

“Never be ashamed of small beginnings” said the great Oak to the acorn. 🌳

Dance Fit: Now this is one you can definitely dance with, I’m positive.
